Why Stability Matters

Active ingredients don’t last forever. From the moment a product is manufactured, chemical processes begin breaking down its key components. Heat, light, air, and time all contribute to degradation.

A vitamin C serum that tested at 15% concentration when bottled might contain 8% after six months and 2% after a year. The product still exists. It still feels the same. It just isn’t working anymore.

Stability isn’t about safety (though that matters too) — it’s about efficacy. An unstable product is a waste of money because you’re paying for benefits you’re not receiving.

The Most Unstable Ingredients

Some active ingredients degrade much faster than others.

Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid)

Efficacy Checks

Reduced tingling: A vitamin C serum that used to cause slight tingling but no longer does may have oxidised.

  • Add antioxidants like vitamin E and ferulic acid to protect vitamin C

  • Choose appropriate preservative systems

A cheap vitamin C serum in poor packaging will degrade faster than an expensive, well-formulated product in airless packaging — even if the initial concentrations were identical.
