Rosehip Oil: What It Does and What It Doesn't
Rosehip oil has a reputation that outpaces its evidence — but not by as much as you might expect. Here's what the research actually supports, where the gaps are, and how to use it well.
Rosehip oil keeps showing up on “must-have” lists, usually sandwiched between a retinol and a vitamin C serum as though it belongs in the same weight class. It doesn’t, quite — but dismissing it as just another overhyped oil would be selling it short. The truth about rosehip oil sits somewhere less dramatic than the marketing and more interesting than the sceptics allow.
What you’re actually putting on your skin
Rosehip oil is pressed from the seeds (and sometimes the fruit) of wild rose plants, most commonly Rosa canina or Rosa rubiginosa. It’s been used in traditional medicine for centuries, particularly in Chile, but its modern skincare reputation rests on its fatty acid profile and a handful of bioactive compounds.
The oil is rich in linoleic acid (omega-6) and alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3), both polyunsaturated fatty acids that the skin can’t produce on its own. It also contains smaller amounts of oleic acid. The linoleic-to-oleic ratio is worth knowing about: oils higher in linoleic acid tend to feel lighter and are generally better tolerated by oily or acne-prone skin, while those heavier in oleic acid can feel richer but may aggravate breakouts for some people. Rosehip sits on the linoleic-dominant side, which partly explains why it’s better tolerated than many facial oils.
Beyond the fatty acids, rosehip oil contains naturally occurring trans-retinoic acid (tretinoin) and beta-carotene — both related to vitamin A, though in concentrations far lower than a purpose-built retinoid product. Scarring and post-inflammatory marks. This is probably rosehip oil’s strongest claim. Several small studies — including a 2015 trial published in PLOS ONE — found that twice-daily application of rosehip oil improved the appearance of surgical and post-acne scars over 6–12 weeks. The improvements were modest but real: better colour, flatter texture, and reduced redness. If you’re looking for something to help fade post-inflammatory marks, rosehip oil is a reasonable supporting option — though it won’t match dedicated treatments like prescription retinoids for more stubborn pigmentation.
Moisturising and barrier support. The fatty acid content gives rosehip oil genuine emollient properties — it softens and smooths the skin surface and can help reduce transepidermal water loss. That’s not unique to rosehip (plenty of plant oils do this), but the linoleic acid content is specifically relevant for barrier function. Some research suggests that linoleic acid can be incorporated into skin barrier ceramides, supporting repair rather than just sitting on top. That makes it slightly more interesting than a purely occlusive oil, though the effect is gentle rather than transformative.
Photoageing. A couple of studies — mostly in vitro or small clinical trials — suggest rosehip oil’s antioxidant content (carotenoids, tocopherols, phenolic acids) may offer some protection against UV-induced oxidative damage. This is plausible chemistry but thin evidence. It’s not a substitute for sunscreen, and the antioxidant delivery from a facial oil is modest compared to a dedicated vitamin C serum. Think of it as a small bonus, not a feature to buy it for.
General skin tone and texture. Users consistently report that rosehip oil evens out skin tone and improves overall texture with regular use. That probably reflects the combined effect of the linoleic acid, the trace retinoids, and the emollient action rather than any single dramatic mechanism. It’s a gentle, cumulative effect — the kind that’s real but hard to photograph.
Where it thins out
Anti-ageing claims. Some brands position rosehip oil alongside retinol, pointing to its natural trans-retinoic acid content. The problem is concentration: the retinoid content in rosehip oil is orders of magnitude lower than even a gentle over-the-counter retinol product. Expecting it to deliver retinoid-level results for wrinkles or significant photodamage would be setting yourself up for disappointment. It may contribute something, but it’s not doing retinol’s job.
Acne treatment. The linoleic acid story is genuinely interesting — some research suggests that acne-prone skin tends to be deficient in linoleic acid, and that supplementing it topically might help. But “might help” is doing a lot of work there. A few small studies point in the right direction, but rosehip oil hasn’t been tested rigorously enough as an acne treatment to make strong claims. If your skin is oily and breakout-prone but tolerates oils, it’s a reasonable thing to try. It’s not a treatment.
Brightening. Any “brightening” effect from rosehip oil is subtle at best — a function of mild exfoliation from trace retinoids and improved hydration, not active pigment suppression. If evening out skin tone is your primary goal, ingredients like niacinamide or azelaic acid are more effective tools.
Using it well

Two to three drops is usually enough for the full face. Morning or evening or both — it’s not photosensitising, so daytime use is fine, though some people prefer it at night because it can leave a slight sheen. A slight sheen, not a slick: if your skin feels greasy half an hour later, you’re probably using too much.
It’s compatible with most other actives. You can layer it over retinoids (it may even help buffer irritation), with vitamin C, with niacinamide, with AHAs — rosehip oil is not reactive or pH-sensitive, so combinations are rarely a problem.
Storage matters more than you’d think. Rosehip oil is high in polyunsaturated fats, which means it oxidises faster than more stable oils like squalane or jojoba. Keep it in a dark glass bottle, away from heat and light, and use it within six months of opening. If it smells off — rancid, painty, or noticeably different from when you opened it — throw it away. Oxidised oils can be irritating and aren’t doing your skin any favours.
What to look for
Cold-pressed, unrefined rosehip oil retains more of its bioactive compounds than refined versions. The colour should be deep amber to orange-red — pale, almost clear rosehip oil has likely been refined and stripped of the carotenoids that contribute to its benefits.
Look for Rosa canina or Rosa rubiginosa on the label. Some products labelled “rosehip” are blended with cheaper carrier oils, which isn’t necessarily bad but isn’t what you’re paying for if you want the full fatty acid and antioxidant profile.
Price varies widely, but rosehip oil doesn’t need to be expensive. It’s a commodity ingredient, not a patented formulation. A good cold-pressed oil in dark glass packaging from a reputable supplier is all you need — no need to chase premium branding for what is, ultimately, seed oil in a bottle.

Can I use rosehip oil if I have oily skin? Yes — its linoleic acid dominance means it’s generally well-tolerated by oily skin types, unlike heavier oleic-dominant oils. Start with one to two drops and see how your skin responds.
Does it clog pores? Rosehip oil is generally considered non-comedogenic, though individual reactions vary. If you’re prone to breakouts, patch test on your jawline for a week before committing.
Can it replace my retinol? No. The trace retinoid content is far too low to deliver the results a proper retinol or tretinoin product provides. It’s a complement, not a substitute.
